SAND PLANT HISTORY

For fourteen months between April 2006 and June 2007 Cooley Equipment ran our complete dry sand manufacturing plant for Vulcan Materials at their San Bernardino facility, a hard rock, sand and gravel operation. The main goal of the project was to crush their 250,000 ton pile of “birds eye”, (5/16” x #4), into a #4 minus. Vulcan had no market for the “birds eye”, but could easily sell the #4 minus.
The second goal was to compare sand manufacturing capabilities of a cone crusher and a VSI in hard rock. We used a Metso/Nordberg HP100 and a Barmac 9100 with 600hp. Both crushers were automated and equipped with variable speed drives. The crushers were run together and separately for testing purposes. Metso technicians, with Vulcan’s cooperation, ran extensive tests comparing the crushers as we crushed the “birds eye” and a variety of different size rock ranging from 1 ½” to 3/8”.
The crushing and testing operations both went smoothly. We proved that both crushers were capable of doing the work. In general, as was expected, the cone produced a coarser sand product while the VSI produced a finer gradation of sand but also more #200 minus.

Overall, the project went extremely well. We crushed a total of 300,000 tons of material for Vulcan. When we were not conducting any testing and were able to concentrate on production, we crushed at a rate of 200 to 300 tph, depending on the type of feed material. We had one operator in the MCC, one on the loader, and a ground man. A pleasant surprise was the efficiency of the five Derrick high frequency screens. Very little, if any, undersize was recirculated back to the crushers. The Derrick urethane screen media showed very little wear after each screen produced an average of 60,000 tons of finished product.
